He is an American, Juliard trained, currently Professor of piano at the Brussels Conservatory. He was one of teh prize winners at the Queen Elizabeth competition a few years ago. He is pretty active in the Belgian music circuit. I've heard him a few times both as a soloist and in chamber music. He tends to play a good deal of the lesser known repertory and has made many recordings (for obscure labels however). http://www.iconportal.com/blumenthal.htm On the subject of Belgian based pianists who should be better known, check out the Brazilian Eliane Rodrigues. She teaches at the conservatory here in Antwerp. A very different style but equally interesting. www.ElianeRodrigues.com

I hear Blumenthal regularly in Berlin. He has a light and fluid style and does a lot of chamber music. Not the most exciting player. A first-rate player of second-rate repertory (and vice versa).

I recently came across a recording of Felicien David's Les Brises d'Orient, a collection of piano pieces performed by Blumenthal. I must say I am impressed. Chopin is all over this music in terms of style and approach. I'll admit that, melodically, David is not as tuneful as Chopin, but that's really not a fair assessment. How many writers of piano music are as tuneful as Chopin, Beethoven or Mozart? I enjoy the album immensely and rank it up there with recordings I have of Liszt, Rachmaninov and Scriabin.
